Toray Explainer
Client: SET Japan/Toray
EXPLAINER, ART DIRECTION, ILLUSTRATION, MOTION
SET approached me to lead the design and motion graphics for this project with Toray, an Advanced Materials company headquartered in Tokyo. The brief was to use a pencil sketch/line drawing style to explain their water treatment technologies, and the impact they are having on water reclaimation initiatives around the world. A large part of the pre-production for this project involved deep research and understanding of the complex scientific processes involved, in order to simplify and illustrate them in a simple and clear style for the audience.
Tools used: Adobe After Effects, Illustrator.
We explored a few different styles and ways to describe molecules, membranes, and chemical components through the water treatment processes. Eventually, we settled on a flowchart-style diagram, accompanied by an illustration that provided a comprehensive overview of the entire process, with specific moments highlighting each step in sync with the scripted content of the video. These animations lived in a wider live-action film that combined footage of the treatment facilities and interviews with Toray staff and their clients.
